Hello Dear Families!

Today your child is bringing home:

  1. Math lesson 4.8

  2. Updated missing work list (if applicable)

  3. An update regarding reading and typing goals.

  4. A PILE of graded papers that they should improve at home

  5. A graded essay, “Personal Narrative,” to improve (due next Monday).

  6. Syllabus for technology section of upcoming S.T.E.A.M. week

  7. Secret Santa paper

Shhhhh... it’s Secret Santa!  Students drew names today to see who they will be a special friend to in the month of December. We have a mailbox here in the classroom where they can “mail” thoughtful, anonymous notes, or bring little treats, to their secret friend throughout this month. This person will also be the person for whom they will buy a gift for the gift exchange at our class Christmas party. Please see the letter that your child is bringing home for more information.

S.T.E.A.M. week is coming up for fifth grade, from December 16-20! We are really looking forward to an engaging week of science, technology, engineering, art and math! Weston Sleeman  (Mrs. Sleeman Jr.) is a Microsoft Certified Professional programmer and Computer Science major at Royal Holloway, University of London. He will be teaching our fifth graders fundamental concepts and programming basics during this week. Your child is bringing home a syllabus today that he has put together so that you can see what that they will be learning.

In addition to that, your child will be enjoying other science, art, and engineering activities throughout that week. Because of this, in addition to music practice, there will be no math class that week (12/16-12/20) and no math homework. (Merry Christmas!)

Graded personal narrative essays are coming home today for your child to improve. They are due next Monday, 12/9. Please help your child proofread their essay (or ask an older sibling/other adult) BEFORE your they submit it. It is best for your child to log in to Google Docs (SBJA email address on Google) to improve their existing essay. Otherwise they may retype their improved essay on a Word or Pages document. Essays should be shared with me (via Google Docs) or  emailed to me at  Thanks for your help on this--it’s important training for middle school!

Our next math test over chapter 5, multiplying decimals, will be this Wed. Dec. 4.
